The service was quick and simple, finding the service manual easy and it appears to be the original with colour schematics. It contained the info I was after and so sorted the problem.

Note:
Mackie HR824 make extensive use of surface mount devices (SMD). Service on the HR824 must
only be undertaken by experienced service technicians with the right tools, experience and patience to perform surface mount rework when needed.
IOP Data Recording and Display When optical Pick-up and Non-volatile Memory (IC171 of BD (MD)board) are Replaced
The IOP value labeled on the optical pick-up can be recorded in the non-volatile memory. By recording the value, it will eliminate the need to look at the value on the label of the optical pick-up. When replacing the optical pick-up or non-volatile memory (IC171 of BD (MD) board), record the IOP value on the optical pick-up according to the following procedure. Record Precedure: 1. When the power ON, press the ?/1 button while pressing the s button and z (TAPE) button together. 2. Press the lm/TUNING � button or ML/TUNING + button to display �[Service]�, and press the ENTER/YES �R� button. 3. Press the lm/TUNING � button or ML/TUNING + button to display � lop Write�, and press the ENTER/YES �R� button. 4. The display becomes �Ref=@@@.@� (@ is an arbitrary number) and the numbers which can be changed will blink. 5. Input the IOP value written on the optical pick-up. To select the number : Press the lm/TUNING � button or ML/TUNING + button. To select the digit : Press the SYNCHRO REC button and ENTER/START button at the sawe time. Note 1) Note 1 : If a message �Can not SYNC!� or �NO TAPE� appears momentarily, press SYNCRO REC button several times until �CD-MD SYNC?� appears momentarily. When the ENTER/YES �R� button is pressed, the display becomes �Measu=@@@.@� (@ is an arbitrary number). As the adjustment results are recorded for the 6 value. Leave it as it is and press the ENTER/YES �R� button. �Complete!� will be displayed momentarily. The value will be recorded in the non-volatile memory and the display will become �Iop Write�. Press the REPEAT/DOLBY NR/STEREO/MONO button to exit.
