Having bought a pre-owned Sony FM stereo tuner through eBay, it came without any manuals. It soon became clear that to get the best from this excellent tuner I needed a decent manual because much of the operation was not intuitive to a newboy to hi fi like me. I managed to download the official Sony multi-lingual manual from Owner-Manuals.com with no problem at all - a really quick and easy service. I'm very glad I did because I found out all the operations of the tuner and was then able to not only set it up quickly but also to get much more from it that poke-and-hope trialling would ever achieve. In my book $4.99 very well spent.

You can adjust the output level while playing sources. You can adjust the level according to your preference by thickening or thinning the ultra bass, for example.

� Sound can be distorted if you raise the volume while the subwoofer level is high. Reduce the subwoofer level if this occurs. � Adjust the output level by taking steps described in �Testing speaker output/Adjusting speaker volumes� (á page 34) when you wish to make detailed settings.

Silencing speakers temporarily
MUTING � �MUTING IS ON � scrolls across the display while the volume is muted. � Press the button again to cancel the operation.
Muting is canceled when you turn the unit off or adjust the volume.

Dimming the display light (Dimmer) n On the unit

DIMMER � Press the button to dim the display. The light above [INPUT SELECTOR] and [VOLUME] goes off. � Press the button again to cancel the operation.

Detecting speaker status automatically
You can easily check connection status of each speaker when you want to. How speakers are displayed L : Front left C : Center R : Front right S : Surround SB : Surround back W : Subwoofer
2) The display shows the number of detected speakers (excluding the subwoofer). 3) The display shows connected speakers. 4) When automatic detection is finished, the display returns to the original.

� Automatic detection does not work well depending on speakers and cables. Make speaker settings manually in such cases (á page 39). � These settings remain effective after the unit goes off. � To enjoy ELS Surround sound, be sure to perform the auto speaker setup (á pages 26 and 27) after this setting. � �WARNING � messages may appear on the display depending on detection results (á below). The right surround back speaker was detected, but the unit did not detect the left surround back speaker. Use the terminal for the left speaker when you connect one surround back speaker only (á page 23). The unit did not detect left and right surround speakers. Connect surround speakers as well when you connect surround back speakers to the unit. The unit did not detect one of the two surround speakers. Check speaker connections.
